Alumni Game Reminder - November 7th

~Alumni Game Reminder~

Just a reminder that the 2010 UConn Lacrosse Alumni game will be held at 2pm on November 7th at Depot Field (directions http://uconnmenslacrosse.blogspot.com/1999/04/facilitiesdirections.html). This summer Depot Field underwent a significant renovation and the field looks great. Please try your best to arrive on time. There's no rain in the forecast and it looks like we'll have low 50's weather.  Alumni are invited to attend an informal post game gathering at Teds for drinks and food (I am sure some of us will also be at Teds before the game).  The team would like all alumni to know that if someone needs a place to crash at all this weekend feel free to contact mason.banwell@uconn.edu for accommodations.

~UConn Preseason Ranking~

Huskies are ranked 5th in PCLL preseason Poll.  Read more at this link.

~2011 ESPNU Warrior Classic Announced~

As I am sure many of you are aware last year ESPN hosted a lacrosse doubleheader at UConn's football field Renstchler Field.  We were able to secure ticket discounts for UConn Lacrosse Alumni and held a tailgate pregame.  Overall the events attendance was good, but could have been better in my opinion if the start time wasn't so early (11:00am) and had teams with more name recognition.  This years event should be much improved as the start times are 4pm and 7pm for Hofstra vs. UMass and Syracuse vs. Rutgers respectively.  I'll again work with AEG to secure some sort of ticket deal.  More info to come early spring.

UConn Lacrosse Alumni Game and Other News

~Alumni Game Info~

The 2010 UConn Lacrosse Alumni game will be held at 2pm on November 7th at Depot Field (directions http://uconnmenslacrosse.blogspot.com/1999/04/facilitiesdirections.html).  I realize this date is a little later in the fall then when we would typically hold this event, but hopefully that does not deter attendance.  This summer Depot Field underwent a million dollar renovation and the field looks amazing, but unfortunately the project took longer than expected, which complicated fall scheduling on the field.   Nonetheless, November 7th 2pm is a lock, and I will have more information about any post or pregame celebrations later this month.

~Jack McGetrick Passes Away~

Divison 1 Bellarmine Head Coach Jack McGertick passed away on October 9th after a long battle with cancer.  Jack, know to many as 'black jack', coached at several high schools in Connecticut, and in the early 90's was the head coach of the UConn Men's Lacrosse club team.  He eventually would leave UConn to coach at Division 1 Hartford, where he would compile an 87-74 record over 11 seasons.  In 2004 he left as the winningest coach in Hartford history to head to Kentucky for his new position as Bellarmine's first ever head coach.  Jack is survived by his wife, Lysa, and four children: Trista, Devon, Eamon, and Connor.  More info: http://athletics.bellarmine.edu/news/2010/10/10/MLAX_1010103334.aspx

~Tim Weir Named Head Coach at Manhattanville~

Congratulations to Tim Weir '84 for being names as the Head Men's Lacrosse Coach at Manhattanville College (D3).  Before being named Head Coach, Tim was an assistant coach at Manhattanville under Todd Hodgson as well as the Director of Coaching and Development for the Ireland Lacrosse Foundation. More info: http://www.govaliants.com/news/2010/10/6/MLAX_1006105921.aspx

2010 Alumni Game

I apologize for the delay in sending out alumni game information.  Scheduling has been more difficult then usual this year due to the fact that Depot Field underwent a million dollar renovation over the summer.  Myself and the team had originally hoped for an October 3rd date to coincide with Homecoming Weekend, and we were initially told by University administration that the field would likely be completed by that date.

Unfortunately, after making a phone call today I was told that while the field would possibly be available on 10/3, they could not give me a 100% guarantee. I did not want to move forward with the game without an 100% guarantee of field time, so after talking to team officials we have decided that the alumni game will be held on the weekend of October 23rd with an exact day/time/facility TBD.  We will work to finalize all alumni game info and get it out to everyone as soon as possible.

Also, team captain Mason Banwell wanted me to let you all know that if anyone needs a place to stay on homecoming weekend to feel free to contact him and he can make arrangements with team members.  His contact info is mason.banwell@uconn.edu,

UConn Men's Lacrosse Defeats BU In PCLL Opener

(Boston, MA) The UConn Men's Lacrosse team started conference play this
past Friday when the Huskies traveled to Nickerson Field to play the
Boston University Terriers. The Huskies started the game off by scoring
the first two goals. Freshman Charlie Ogalin had his first career goal as
he fired a shot into an open net, while another newcomer, Freshmen Zach
Rubin also buried one in the back of the net, with an assist going to
Charlie Ogalin.

The Terriers then scored on a man-up opportunity to make it 2-1. Sophomore
Sean Murphy scored in the second quarter to make it 3-1 and Sophomore
Travis Church added another to make it 4-1. The Terriers got another
man-up goal in the second quarter. The half ended with the Huskies leading
4-2, and that would be the end of the scoring for the Terriers.

The beginning of the second half started off the same as the first half,
but soon the Huskies found their groove and started rolling. The Huskies
riding game was particularly well, forcing several dropped passes and
turnovers, including one that Junior Mason Banwell scooped up and hit an
open Charlie Ogalin for his second goal of the night. With man-up goals
from Senior Wes Downing, and another two from Zach Rubin, the Huskies were
able to increase their lead and never let go.

The defense for the Huskies played particularly well, helping Junior
goalie Peter Gabriele keep the Terriers shooters at bay. After giving up
two goals early on in man down situations the Huskies defense tightened
up, giving up no goals in the second half. The win was a big one for the
Huskies, improving their record to 2-0, but more importantly, starting
conference play off with a win. The Huskies travel to WPI on Tuesday,
March 30th and then host conference foe Northeastern at Sherman Field at 8
pm on April 2nd.

ESPNU Warrior Classic At Rentschler Field

As some of you may know, Rentschler Field will be hosting a televised NCAA
D1 Lacrosse Double Header, the ESPNU Warrior Classic, on April 24th.
http://blogs.insidelacrosse.com/2010/01/13/espnu-announces-warrior-classic-event-in-connecticut/)

The teams involved include UMass, Georgetown, Denver, and Fairfield.

Tickets are now on sale (link:
http://www.ticketmaster.com/event/1D004434A2453D19?did=warrior.  We will
be contacting the Rentschler Field ticket office to inquire about
information in regard to group sales, and possible discounted tickets for
our members.  It is my hope that this will be an opportunity for UConn
Lacrosse to have a huge presence, both tailgating and in the stands, and
in front of a nationally televised audience at a game in our own backyard.
More info will be forthcoming in the near future.
